Sulu Sea Water Temperature Today & Regional Overview
We find every place where you can swim and show you the water temperature there today and throughout the year.
Current Water Temperature
The water temperature in the Sulu Sea today ranges from 29.4°C (Zamboanga, Philippines) to 30.9°C (Bacolod, Philippines).
As of today, the minimum water temperature in the Sulu Sea is above 82°F (28°C). This is very warm water, which may feel almost hot to most people. Swimming in such conditions is perfect for those seeking relaxation and comfort in the water. These waters are often preferred for relaxation in hot weather, as the water temperature does not cool the body significantly. However, it is important to remember that in such warm waters, caution is necessary, as prolonged exposure without rest can lead to overheating.
It is important to note that these swimming tips and recommendations apply only in good weather. When the air temperature is below 68°F (20°C), and sometimes even below 77°F (25°C), swimming can be unpleasant even with relatively high water temperatures.

The Sulu Sea, located in the southwestern Philippines, is a warm tropical body of water with surface temperatures that remain inviting for most of the year. Typical annual sea-surface temperatures generally fall between about 26 °C and 30 °C. Seasonal variation is modest: the coolest period tends to be during the northeast monsoon from roughly December to February, when surface temperatures commonly range from about 25 °C to 28 °C. The hottest months occur in the spring and early summer, from March through May, when waters frequently reach 28 °C to 31 °C. During the southwest monsoon and the rainy season, from June through November, temperatures usually sit in the mid-to-high 20s to around 30 °C, though localized upwelling or deeper-water influences can produce occasional pockets of cooler water down toward the low 20s °C in some areas.
Swimming Conditions
Swimming in the Sulu Sea is generally permitted and popular where beaches, resorts and dive sites provide access. The warm temperatures make the water comfortable for swimming, snorkeling and diving for extended periods without thermal protection. However, swimming conditions vary widely along the sea’s expanse: strong currents, tidal flows, seasonal storms and limited beach infrastructure can create hazards in certain locations and times of year. Water clarity is often excellent around reefs and islands, but can be reduced by runoff or storms. Local rules, presence of lifeguards, boat traffic and conservation restrictions in marine protected areas should be observed. In short, the Sulu Sea’s temperatures are well suited to recreational swimming, but local sea state and safety conditions determine when and where it is advisable to enter the water.
